If you’re new to the world of IT, or considering engaging with a Managed IT Services provider, you’ve probably run across some unfamiliar terminology.
We’ve got you covered! In this post, we’ll explain some of the most common Managed IT terms you should know.
Backup and Disaster Recovery (BDR)
We’ll begin by looking at some common terms that are used when discussing data backup and disaster recovery:
- Business Continuity (BC): The preparation and planning to ensure that in the event of a crisis (anything from a power outage to a natural disaster… or a pandemic) critical business tasks can continue.
- Backup and Disaster Recovery (BDR): This is a plan that includes a combination of both automatic data backup and recovery solutions that work together ensuring that in a crisis, your systems are quickly restored and functioning.
- Recovery Time Objective (RTO): A pre-determined measure of how quickly your data and systems must be recovered in order to ensure business continuity after an event.

Strategic Business Review (SBR)

Virtual Chief Information Officer (vCIO)
The Chief Information Officer is responsible for the management, implementation, and usability of technology. However, for many smaller businesses, adding a CIO is cost-prohibitive. A “vCIO” is an outsourced person who analyzes your company’s current technological environment and helps you to develop an appropriate IT strategy.
Network Monitoring and Remediation
- Remote Monitoring Management (RMM): Software-based system designed to help Managed Service Providers to remotely and proactively monitor client endpoints, networks, and computers.
- Network Operations Center (NOC): NOC members use RMM software to monitor company infrastructure health, security, and capacity to keep your systems running at peak efficiency.
